EMERITUS PROFESSOR OF MUSIC AND BLACK STUDIES
Dr. Terence “Doc T” Elliott is an Emeritus Professor of Black Studies and Music whose life’s work centers on uplifting communities through education, cultural empowerment, and sound-based healing practices. With a career spanning over three decades, Dr. Elliott is widely respected for his unique ability to bridge academia, art, and community wellness, inspiring transformational learning and collective healing.
Holding a Doctorate in Educational Leadership, an M.A. in Creative Arts Interdisciplinary Studies, and a B.A. in Music and Black Studies, Dr. Elliott’s scholarship and professional practice reflect a deep commitment to culturally responsive education. He has long championed service-learning as a cornerstone for student growth, cultivating partnerships with community agencies, colleges, and global institutions to create experiential learning opportunities that enrich teaching, learning, and civic engagement.
Throughout his distinguished academic career, Dr. Elliott served in multiple leadership roles—including Division Dean of Natural, Social, and Applied Sciences at Contra Costa College and Senior Dean of Instruction at Los Medanos College. He also served as a tenured professor at Diablo Valley College, where he taught widely celebrated courses such as The History of Hip-Hop Music and Culture, Introduction to Humanities, and Introduction to Social Justice. His curriculum development, mentorship, and community-building initiatives have shaped generations of students, educators, and cultural activists.
As a long-standing board member of A2MEND (African American Male Education Network and Development), Dr. Elliott has helped guide statewide efforts to improve educational outcomes for African American male students, advocating for equity, leadership development, and institutional accountability across California’s community colleges.
Dr. Elliott is also an accomplished author. His works include:
- Spirit, Rhythm, and Story: Community Building and Healing through Song
- Hip-Hop Music: History and Culture — the first e-textbook on Hip-Hop used in California community colleges.
- The Healing Power of Sound for the Black Community (forthcoming 2026) examines sound and vibration as tools for restoring wellness, memory, and cultural identity in Black communities.
Today, widely known as Doc T, he brings his scholarship full circle as a certified sound therapist and Kemetic Reiki practitioner, offering transformational wellness experiences throughout the community. His sound therapy sessions integrate mindfulness, meditation, Qigong, and a variety of healing instruments—including crystal bowls, Himalayan bowls, didgeridoo, gongs, ocean drums, rattles, flutes, and chimes—to help individuals and groups relieve stress, release emotional blockages, and realign the body, mind, and spirit. With each session, Doc T creates a sacred space where participants can slow down, breathe deeply, reconnect with themselves, and experience the ancient power of vibration-based healing.
A visionary educator, cultural scholar, musician, and healer, Dr. Terence “Doc T” Elliott continues to inspire communities through his mission: to heal, teach, and empower through sound, culture, and collective liberation.
