Abdimalik Buul is an innovative dynamic leader within the San Diego community. An immigrant refugee from Somalia he came to the United States at the age of 5 and grew up in city heights and southeast San Diego. He completed his bachelors degree from SDSU in Sociology and a masters degree in education with an emphasis in community based counseling and social justice also from SDSU. He recently completed his doctorate work in Educational leadership with an emphasis in Educational psychology from the university of Southern California. He is in assistant professor of counseling and transfer center director at San Diego city college.
He was the first Somali ever to be hired as a tenure track faculty member at southwestern college where he served as Umoja coordinator and chair of the black alliance from 2015-2018 prior to accepting his new position at City college. He also worked as a special projects research manager with UCSD and a program specialist with the San Diego workforce partnership. He was awarded the Golden Apple award as the faculty member of the year at city college it is the first time such a recognition was given to a faculty member from student services.
He’s a published researcher and scholar practitioner who uses social Justice & activism as his guiding pedagogy for change. He is the second oldest of 13 and is a proud father to a one-year old daughter named Salma and has been married for seven years to his wife Sudi.
