structure, run by
students.
Under the auspice and affiliation of the African American Male Education Network and Development (A²MEND), the Student Charter of A²MEND is a student support structure that seeks to establish an affirming environment where African American male students and other men of color are able to thrive.
The aim of the A²MEND student charter is to improve academic success and to develop culturally competent servant student leaders. The student charters of A²MEND provide educational, cultural, social, and intellectual programs that promote positivity and brotherhood among its members.
Chartering is open to high schools as well as colleges. Five California high schools currently run A²MEND charters alongside the community college and university campuses where the model was built.

In 2025 UC Berkeley became the first university — and the first UC campus — to establish an A²MEND charter, carrying a model built in the community colleges into a research university. The charter network now reaches high schools, community colleges and universities alike.
That same year the network crossed into Washington with a new charter at Green River College, joining established charters across California and Minnesota. Solano Community College expanded its charter presence, and charter students have gone on to UC Berkeley, UC Riverside, and Harvard.
